JULY 19 - Teresienstadt Concentration Camp.
A full day trip to the Theresienstadt "model" concentration camp. Terezin's Small Fortress served as a prison for military and political opponents to the Hapsburg monarchy in the early 19th century. But the most tragic part of Terezin's history came after the Czech lands were occupied by Nazi Germany. Terezin's Small Fortress was converted to a police prison of the Prague Gestapo in June 1940; in November 1941, a ghetto and concentration camp for Jews was established in the Large Fortress. This camp was used during the war as a façade: it was fixed by the Nazis to look like a spa town to the International Red Cross. The ruse worked and the Red Cross backed off, allowing the death camps to continue their horrific work.
Return to your hotel in Prague for overnight.

JULY 20 - Germany
After the drive to Berlin (about 4 hours), we begin with a visit to the Brandenburg Gate, the best-known symbol of Berlin, the gate that welcomed kings and emperors, homecoming armies and conquerors, and in the twentieth century marked the border where the Berlin Wall divided East from West. A block from the Brandenburg Gate is the Memorial for the Murdered Jews of Europe. It is situated in Berlin's city center, built near the Reichstag. The decision to build this memorial was made by the German parliament on June 25, 1999, when it passed a resolution to realize a design by Peter Eisenman. The design envisages a Field of Stelae, 2,711 concrete blocks of different heights, structured in a grid pattern and covering nearly 19,000 meters of gently sloping ground. The federal Holocaust memorial is the only example in the world of a country constructing an official monument to its own victims. We will continue with a visit to the Reichstag, the German parliament building. This impressive late 19th century monument to German parliamentary tradition burned down in 1933 along with German democracy as Hitler rose to power. Today it is restored and serves once again as a palace of democracy. Our tour of central Berlin will continue with the Orianienburgerstrasse synagogue, what was once the largest synagogue in the world. We will visit the museum in what has been restored of the synagogue, including its striking golden dome. A special stop at Checkpoint Charlie (photo opportunity!) Kosher dinner at Gabriel Restaurant in the Jewish Community Center.
Overnight in Berlin.

JULY 21 - Jewish Heritage sites of Berlin.
The influence of Berlin's diverse Jewish communities - reform, orthodox, artistic and intellectual - extended across the Western World. The traces of these communities still exist and link in a web of fascinating history in the city's former Jewish quarter. Our tour of Jewish Berlin provides an excellent introduction to a history so relevant for the Jewish world of today. Abundant highlights include the New Synagogue, the city's original Jewish cemetery, the active central school of Berlin's Jewish community, traces of Krystalnacht and the Nazi period, the Yidass Yisrael Synagogue, Otto Weidt's Workshop for the Blind, the site of the Rosenstrasse Protest. In the afternoon, we will visit the new Jewish Museum (Jüdisches Museum). It covers two millennia of German Jewish history. The new building was designed by world-renowned architect Daniel Liebeskind. This was one of the first buildings in Berlin designed after German reunification.
Overnight in Berlin.

JULY 22 - Germany's Tragic Past
We begin the day with a visit to the Weissensee cemetery, giving us a sense of the size and importance of Berlin's Jewish community before the Shoah. From the cemetery we will travel to Wannsee. The Wannsee Conference, a meeting of senior officials of the Nazi German regime held in this Berlin suburb on January 20, 1942, is generally understood as the moment of planning and coordination of "the final solution to the Jewish question." The implementation of this coordinated operation marks the most deadly phase of the Shoah. In the afternoon we will return to central Berlin, visiting the Neue Wache, the federal memorial to the victims of war and tyranny, and the German Historical Museum, where we will learn how contemporary Germany makes sense of its past. Shabbat Dinner.

JULY 23 - Shabbat in Berlin Full day at leisure
A walking tour will be offered. It will include the grave of Moses Mendelssohn, considered the "first modern Jew", and the buildings that used to house the liberal and modern Orthodox seminaries.
Lunch at the hotel. Our Farewell Dinner!

JULY 24 - Goodbye, Berlin!
Early morning flight to the USA. We will arrive on the same day.
